White Hmong

Etymology

From Proto-Hmong-Mien *ŋiuŋ (water buffalo, cow), borrowed from Old Chinese (OC *ŋʷɯ, “cow”), albeit with an unexpected nasalization of the ending consonant in the Hmong-Mien form.[1] The White Hmong form's loss of the nasal may be due to phonetic influence from modern Mandarin (niú). Cognate with Iu Mien ngongh.
