White Hmong
Etymology
From Proto-Hmong-Mien *ŋiuŋ (“water buffalo, cow”), borrowed from Old Chinese 牛 (OC *ŋʷɯ, “cow”), albeit with an unexpected nasalization of the ending consonant in the Hmong-Mien form.[1] The White Hmong form's loss of the nasal may be due to phonetic influence from modern Mandarin 牛 (niú). Cognate with Iu Mien ngongh.
Pronunciation
Noun
nyuj (classifier: tus)
- cow or bull
- nyuj nqov ― the cow bellows
