Derived from Proto-Finnic *pähkä, from Proto-Finno-Permic *päškɜ. Related to Estonian pähkel, Ingrian päähkänä, Livonian pē’gõz, Veps pähkim, Votic pähtšene, Erzya пеште (pešťe), Eastern Mari пӱкш (pükš) and Udmurt пашпу (pašpu, “hazelnut (bush)”).
