Romanian

Etymology

Probably from Vulgar Latin *pictāre, a verb based on Classical Latin pictus (painted). For the semantics, cf. Spanish pinta (stain) < pintar (paint, verb). The normal outcome of /kt/ is /pt/ in Romanian, but the loss of /p/ in this case can be explained as the result of dissimilation from the word-initial /p/. (Compare boteza < baptizāre and possibly pat < pactum.)[1] Doublet of picta, borrowed from the Italian cognate pittare.

Verb

a păta (third-person singular present pătează, past participle pătat) 1st conj.

  1. to stain, blot, speckle, smudge
  2. to soil, taint, blemish
