From *dalom (“needle”) + pa- -an. Fossilized word *dalom possibly came from Malay jarum, ultimately from Proto-Austronesian *zaʀum (“needle”) (cf. karayom, Cebuano dagom and Javanese dom). Cognate to Kapampangan paraluman, Maranao padoman, Tausug padduman, and Indonesian pedoman (“compass”).
