Hungarian

Etymology

Created during the Hungarian language reform, which took place in the 18th–19th centuries. Conversion by deliberate coinage from peng (to ring, clink) +‎ -e (obsolete present-participle suffix). For the semantic change, compare German Klinge (blade) from klingen (to ring, clink). In terms of form, a split took place from cognate pengő. The later slang (adjective) sense may well be a metaphorical reference to the edge of a blade.
