Uncertain. The word may be a borrowing from Old Norse píka (“girl, lass, virgin”) (compare Swedish piga (“maid, female servant; female employee on a farm”)) or the Norse term might be from Finnic (compare Estonian piiga (“girl”), Karelian piika (“maid; girl (especially Virgin Mary)”), Votic piikõ (“maid, girl”)). Has sometimes been compared with Turkic words (Chuvash пике (pik̬e, “(young) lady, miss, beauty”)).
