Unclear; from Proto-Albanian *kertsula,[1] possibly borrowed from Latin cercellus, circellus (“small ring, hoop”),[2] ultimately borrowed from Ancient Greek κίρκος (kírkos, “ring”). Doublet of qark, qarkull. Alternatively inherited from Proto-Indo-European *ker-ḱ-[1] or *kert- (“to turn, to bind”),[3] or simply qerth + -ull.
