Shortening of *qiftër, from Byzantine Greek ξιφτέρι, ἐξιφτέριν (xiphtéri, exiphtérin), from Latin accipiter (“hawk”).[1] According to Orel, borrowed directly from Latin accipiter (“vulture”), for the loss of the last syllable see mbret.[2] Doublet of skifter.
