Etymology

Generally percieved, and treated by speakers, as it derived from an unattested, and highly unexplained, *gràpiri. In any case from the metathesis of Vulgar Latin *aprō, from Latin aperīre. The irregular lack of /ʐ/ on the initial ⟨r⟩ can be explained by the fact that the consonant is moved by metathesis, coming from a position within the morpheme. No similar phonetic phenomena appear to be attested. This could also explain why some dialects percieve the word as having a /ɡ/~ sound before the ⟨r⟩ and why other dialects (which percieve most of the ⟨gr-⟩ nexus simply as /ɾ/) perfom, after a stressed syllable placed before the term, a phonosyntactic doubling of the initial ⟨r⟩, yielding /dː/.
