The word is probably borrowed from an Iranian source, compare Digor Ossetian робас (robas, fox), Persian روباه (rôbâh), Sanskrit लोपाक (lopāka).[1] Latin vulpēs and Ancient Greek ἀλώπηξ (alṓpēx) are probably related somehow, but it may be a wanderword.
