From Proto-Indo-European *rey-, *rī- (“to scrape; to pluck; to cut”) (with an extra k); cf. dialectal riekt (“to cut (bread); to plow (for the first time)”). Apparently, the original meaning of rīks was “sharp instrument,” perhaps “knife.” Cognates include Lithuanian rỹkas (“instrument; container”).[1]
