Lithuanian

Etymology

From Proto-Baltic *rūp-, an extended zero-grade form of Proto-Indo-European *Hrewp- (to pull, to tear, to break).[1][2] The sense development would be "to tear, break" > "to emotionally break" > "to worry" > "to care, concern"; a semantic parallel is found in Polish troska (care, worry), from Proto-Slavic *troska (chip, splinter) (the latter denoting a result of breaking).[3] Cognate with Latvian rūpēt; see Latvian rūpe for more.
