From Middle High German radebrechen (“break on the wheel”), equivalent to Rad (“wheel”) + brechen (“to break”). The sense of “torturing a language” by speaking it badly is recorded from the end of the 16th century.
radebrechen (weak or class 4 strong, third-person singular present radebrecht or (nonstandard but common) radebricht, past tense radebrechte or (nonstandard but common) radebrach, past participle geradebrecht or (nonstandard but common) geradebrochen, past subjunctive radebrechte or (nonstandard but common) radebräche, auxiliary haben)
Only the weak (regular) verb forms are standard, but the strong forms (in imitation of the verb brechen) have been common from Luther's time to this day.[1]
