From Proto-Finnic *ranta, borrowed from either Proto-Balto-Slavic *kranta or alternatively Proto-Norse (*stranða) (itself from Proto-Germanic *strandō). Related to Veps rand and Estonian rand. Compare Swedish strand (“beach”) and Lithuanian krantas (“beach, shore”).
