From Proto-Finnic *ranta, borrowed from either Proto-Balto-Slavic *kranta or alternatively Proto-Norse (*stranða) (itself from Proto-Germanic *strandō). Related to Veps rand and Estonian rand. Compare Swedish strand (beach) and Lithuanian krantas (beach, shore).
