read into (third-person singular simple present reads into, present participle reading into, simple past and past participle read into)

1. (transitive) To impart meaning where it is not obvious or does not exist.

   It was just a passing remark; you're reading too much into it.

2. (transitive) To reveal a non-obvious or hidden aspect of a plan or situation to (a person).

     "I didn't realize Professor Uptrobar had been read into the mission." "Is that code for 'you were not authorized to read Professor Uptrobar into the mission?'"

3. (transitive, law, of a court or ruling) To establish that a legislative text should be understood to include certain words or concepts not explicitly found there, by necessary implication and/or to obey constitutional imperatives or similar.

   The Supreme Court of Canada read "sexual orientation" into section 15 of the Charter of Rights in Egan v. Canada.
