From Proto-Polynesian *renga from Proto-Oceanic *renga. Cognate with Hawaiian lena, Tahitian reʻa, Samoan lega and Tongan enga all meaning "turmeric". Sense of colour comes from hue produced by the plant (compare with Hawaiian lenalena), eventually displacing the original meaning when the plant did not survive the cold New Zealand climate.
