Hungarian

retesz

Etymology

Borrowed from a Slavic language, probably from Slovak, compare Slovak reťaz and obsolete/dialectal retäz, reťez, Czech řetěz, Russian ретязь (retjazʹ, chain) (this was its original meaning in Hungarian as well, since chains were used as a means of locking). For the origin of the Slavic words, compare Proto-Slavic *retędzь and Old High German rahhinza from Proto-Germanic *rakentǭ. The spread of the Hungarian word may have been influenced by rekesz.
