Uncertain; suggested to be either borrowed from Frankish *hriubisk, from *hreub (rough) +‎ *-isk,[1] or cognate with Italian rivescio, riverscio (reversed),[2] from Vulgar Latin *reversiciō, from *reversicāre (whence Italian rivesciare, rovesciare (to reverse, turn over)), from Latin reversus (turned around).
