Unknown; cognate with Veps rigeta. Possibly a +‎ -ntää derivative of the dialectal adjective rikeä (“dense”) (for semantics; compare tiuhaan; note also dialectal rikene(h)en (“quickly, soon”)), perhaps related to Northern Sami rahkat.

1. to rush, hurry (to move rapidly somewhere)

   I need to rush to the grocery. They close at five.

Usage notes

• In English "to rush" also means "to do rapidly". In Finnish one would use the verbs kiirehtiä or rynnätä in those cases, or add the adverb pikaisesti, nopeasti, hätäisesti etc. into a verb.
