Probably ris- + -u, from risahtaa, thus onomatopoeic of the snapping sound made by dry twigs. Germanic origin has been proposed (compare Icelandic hrís (“brushwood”) and Swedish ris (“twigs in a heap”)), but considered unlikely for phonetic reasons.

Aikakauslehdissä on usein "ruusuja ja risuja" -niminen osasto kehuja ja kritiikkiä varten.- It's quite common for magazines to have a section called Bouquets and Brickbats for compliments and criticisms.
