Lithuanian

Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *rā́ˀdīˀtei, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂roh₁dʰéyeti, from *h₂reh₁-dʰh₁- (to think, arrange).[1]

Cognate with Latvian rãdît (show, indicate), possibly Old Church Slavonic радити (raditi, take care of). Compare Old Irish ráidid (talk), Gothic 𐍂𐍉𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽 (rōdjan, speak), Icelandic ræða (talk), Sanskrit राध्यते (rādhyate, be satisfied). The ultimate root may be *h₂reh₁- (to arrange); see Latin reor (reckon).

Possibly the causative of ràsti (find), but a connection is difficult due to the latter's accentuation.

Pronunciation

IPA(key): /ˈɾoːdʲiːtʲɪ/

Verb

ródyti (third-person present tense ródo, third-person past tense ródė)

  1. show, display (present to be seen)
