Cognate to Latvian sar̂gs (“watchman, guard”), Old Prussian butsargs (“housekeeper”), possibly apisorx (“kingfisher”) < ape (“river”) + *sorgs. Presumably related to Proto-Slavic *stȏržь (“guard”), see sérgėti for further discussion.
