From Russian саксау́л (saksaúl), via a Turkic variety (cf. Bashkir саҡсауыл (saqsawıl), Kazakh сексеуіл (sekseuıl)), ultimately from Kalmyk (zaɣzāml̥, a bush growing in the desert),[1] compare Mongolian заг (zag, saxaul), Kalmyk за (za).[2][3]
