17th century, borrowed from Yiddish סחרן (sakhern, to do business), derived from Hebrew סחר (sáḥar, trade). The form was influenced by now obsolete schachen (“to plunder”, with long ), itself from Proto-West Germanic *skāk (robbery). The synonymous Yiddish שאַכערן (shakhern) may be a reborrowing.
