Probably from Proto-Finno-Ugric *čäŋkᴕ- (to help)[1] + -ít (verb-forming suffix).[2] For the first element, compare the чанго- (čango-) stem of Erzya чангодемс (čangoďems, to help, to have mercy[3]),[4] with verb-forming suffix (-d),[4] verb stem ,[5] and infinitive suffix -мс (-ms).[6] For the correspondance between Erzya a and Hungarian e, see Hungarian két and tél.[4]
