Turkish

Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish سرمك (sermek), from Proto-Turkic *ser- (to endure, be patient; to spread).[1] Some linguists express their doubts about connection of Old Turkic and modern Turkic forms, however according to Starostin the meanings are unitable within a trans.-intrans. opposition ("spread" - "to be spread > remain"). Cognate with Old Turkic (ser-, to endure, be patient), Turkmen sermek (to spread out), Azerbaijani sərmək.
