Akin to Doric Greek σκᾶπος (skâpos, “branch”) and Latin scāpus (“shaft, stem”). A common inheritance is unlikely as initial *sk- generally yields h-, so it must be either a borrowing from Doric or, in view of the -ā- > -o- shift, an early borrowing from Latin.
