From Proto-Indo-European *seyk- (to reach (for)), and cognate with Ancient Greek ῑ̔́κω (hī́kō, to come, reach). The acute form in the common variant of the Lithuanian (which also has an expected circumflex form siẽkti), is difficult to explain, however.
