Etymology

From sitta (feces) +‎ Proto-Finnic *närhi, due to the bird's habit of scavenging of dung heaps. Akin to dialectal Finnish sittanärhi and Estonian pasknäär.

The loss of the medial -h- is irregular in most dialects, but regular in the Ala-Laukaa dialect. It's possible that this word spread from one dialect to the others, or was borrowed from a Southern Finnic language.
