A denominal verb from an unattested *skala or *skalas (compare ìšskalos (“water with which a vessel is rinsed”)), from the same word family as skélti (“to split, cleave”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kelH- (“to cut, to cleave”).[1] Cognate with Latvian skalinat (“to rinse”); see skal̃bti (“to wash”) for further discussion.
