The origin of this and related words (skrýtilegur, skrýtilyrði, skrýtla) is uncertain. The original stem vowel is uncertain, as the phonetic merger of í and ý predates their earliest attestation in Icelandic. If the ý is original, it may be related to Norwegian skryten (“scrawny”), dialectal Swedish skryten, skruten. Has also been compared to Proto-Germanic *skertaną (“to jump, joke”) and Lithuanian skridinė́̕ti (“to fly in circles (around birds)”), skrìsti (“to fly”).[1]
