From Proto-Finnic *solmu, derived form of *solmi, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *ćolme.[1] Cognate with Estonian sõlm, Karelian solmi, Veps sol'm, Votic sõlmu, Proto-Samic *čuolmë, Erzya сюлмо (śulmo) and Hungarian csomó (“knot”).
