From Proto-Finnic *soomalainën, equivalent to soomi (Finn) +‎ -lain. Cognates include Finnish suomalainen and Estonian soomlane.

The vowel -a- is irregular, and may point to a parallel form *sooma in Proto-Finnic. A similar distribution can be found in rootsi and rootsa (Swede).
