Variant of previous (e)spervarius, (e)sperverius, (e)sprevarius, (e)sperverus, a Latinization of Old French esprevier (“sparrowhawk”) (ancestor of French épervier), ultimately from Germanic *sparwô (“sparrow”)) + a second element that is either from Latin -ārius or Germanic *arô (“eagle”). Linnaeus's spelling with sparv- was possibly influenced by Swedish sparv (“sparrow”).
