Romanian
Etymology
Unknown. Possibly an early borrowing from Proto-Slavic *stanъ (“lodging”). Compare Bulgarian стан (stan, “camp”), Serbo-Croatian stȃn (“apartment”)); Albanian stan and Greek στάνη (stáni), also borrowings from the Proto-Slavic.
The phonetics of the word show it has been in Romanian a few centuries before most of the vocabulary borrowed from Slavic languages. As such, some linguists argue it could be instead a Balkan substrate word, cognate to Albanian shtazë (“animal”).
