Romanian

Etymology

Unknown. Possibly an early borrowing from Proto-Slavic *stanъ (lodging). Compare Bulgarian стан (stan, camp), Serbo-Croatian stȃn (apartment)); Albanian stan and Greek στάνη (stáni), also borrowings from the Proto-Slavic.

The phonetics of the word show it has been in Romanian a few centuries before most of the vocabulary borrowed from Slavic languages. As such, some linguists argue it could be instead a Balkan substrate word, cognate to Albanian shtazë (animal).
