Etymology

From the same source as the verb stigt “to sink, to get stuck,” which had a no longer extant parallel form *staigt (resulting from vowel gradation of the same stem), from which staigns was derived with an extra -n (cf. laipns from lipt). A parallel form without the n, staigs, exists in some dialects, as well as an i-stem form staigņš; there is also another dialectal parallel form stigns with the same grade as the verb stigt.[1]
