Unknown. Possibly from sukki (“cunning, wise, spiteful”) (rare, dialectal) + -la, although the supposed root word is only very scarcely attested (in one dictionary, with no attestations elsewhere). Compare also sukeltaa (“to dive”), which could conceivably be related to sukkela.
