Old Swedish svollin or Old Swedish sullin, from Old Norse sollinn. Compare with Norwegian svullen, German geschwollen, English swollen. Originally a past participle of svälla when conjugated as a strong verb. The v was added by analogy to the verb's infinitive and past tense stems. Doublet of svulstig.
