Etymology

Borrowed from German Stutze, Stutz, Stutzen, from Middle High German stutz, stutze meaning a “support” and also “stub”, and thus a “sawed-off weapon” (today only the “stub” and “weapon” sense is a masculine Stutz, Stutzen while the “support” sense is a feminine Stütze f). For the semantic development, compare German Besteck, which also meant a “sheath where cutlery is kept” and now means “cutlery” itself; on the other hand, German Stütze could mean a “support strut” and thus also a “fork”.
