From tár (“storehouse; magazine”) + -ca (diminutive suffix). Created during the Hungarian language reform, which took place in the 18th–19th centuries. The diminutive suffix was incorrectly inferred from words ending in -ca/-ce such as tálca and mérce and used to create new words.[1]
