From the obsolete tüs variant of tövis (“thorn”), with the diminutive suffix -ke.

1. (botany) prickle (sharpened extension of the outer layers of a plant's stem)
   • 1981, “Van-e rózsa tövis nélkül?”, in Heti Híradó‎, volume 25, number 16:

     Ami ugyanis a rózsán látható, az nem tövis, hanem tüske, s e kettő korántsem ugyanaz.

     For what you can see on a rose is not a thorn but a prickle, and the two are far from being the same.

2. thorn, spine, prickle (any sharp protective part of a plant, without botanical distinction)

     The hedgehog sticks grapes or other berries on its spines, and takes them to its young.

4. spike (piece of pointed metal; the spike of a morning star, of a wrought iron fence, etc.)

5. barb (sharp point on the strands of a barbed wire)

     His charge was halted by a barbed wire: its rusty barbs plowed through his palm.

6. peg, pin (small cylindrical piece with a dull end, made out of wood, metal or plastic)

7. (electricity) pin (the connecting element of a multipole electrical connector)

     Ez utóbbi az elterjedt, amit kinézete (tüskéi elhelyezkedése) miatt D-csatlakozónak is hívnak.

     This latter is more widespread, also called a D-sub because of the way it looks (the layout of its pins).
