Via other European languages, ultimately borrowed from Latin talentum (“weight, monetary unit”), itself a borrowing from Ancient Greek τάλαντον (tálanton, “weight, monetary unit”). The “gift” meaning is probably a metaphor, based on the "money" meaning (“rich” → “gifted”).
