Azerbaijani
Etymology
From Common Turkic *tar + -la.[1][2] This noun-deriving suffix is also present in Azerbaijani çağala, yayla and damla. Cognate with Turkish tarla and Chagatai تارلا (tarla, “sown field”).
Compare a similar formation with the same base of derivation and the suffix -lag[3] in Chagatai (tarlag), Cuman-Kipchak tarlov, Kumyk тарлав (tarlaw), Nogai тарлав (tarlav), Karachay-Balkar тарлау (tarlau), Bashkir and Tatar тарлау (tarlaw), Khakas тарлағ (tarlağ, “ploughed field”).
Alternatively, from Old Anatolian Turkish *tarï-la, from Proto-Oghuz *tarïg-lag, supposed cognate of Karakhanid تَرِغْلاغْ (tarïğlāğ),[4] Old Uyghur (tarïɣlaɣ)[5] and
Old Turkic 𐱃𐰺𐰍𐰞𐰍 (tarïɣlaɣ),[6]
going back to Common Turkic *tarïg-lag.[7][8][9]
