From Proto-Finnic *tarmo (cognate with Karelian tarmo), probably from Proto-Finno-Ugric *tärmä (compare Northern Sami dárbmu, Eastern Khanty тӓрәм (tärəm), Eastern Mansi те̄рыӈ (tēryň)). Has also been compared with Old Norse þarmr (whence also Swedish tarm (“intestine, gut, bowels”)).
