Albanian
Etymology
Unclear. According to Çabej, the word is attested in Pult. It could be an early borrowing from Doric Greek θωράκειον (thōrákeion) or θωράκιον (thōrákion), a diminutive of θώραξ (thṓrax, “breastplate, cuirass, corselet”), or directly from the latter.[1] Alternatively, it could be a later loan from Byzantine Greek θώραξ (thṓrax) (with a metathesis of the vowels) due to the mechanical stress adjustment, which only started taking place in the late Latin period.[2] Orel suggests that it was coined by Gjergj Fishta (as he used it in his translation of the Iliad), representing a derivative in -zë based on tarok (“young bull”).[3]
