From Middle Welsh testun, from Proto-Brythonic *testʉn, contracted from Latin testimōnium (“testimony, evidence”). It is unclear whether the contraction took place in Proto-Brythonic (thus via a form *testɨβ̃ʉn) or in Vulgar Latin (thus via a form *testōnium).[1]
