Turkish
Etymology
From Ottoman Turkish تفتیك, تفتك (tiftik), دفتك (diftik), from Persian تفتیک (taftik), also تفدیگ (tafdig). Akin to Azerbaijani tiftik, Armeno-Kipchak դիֆդիգ (tiftik), դիվդիգ (tivtik). Nişanyan traces the word to the form II verbal noun of Arabic ف ت ك (f-t-k) related to slaughtering, but the spelling variation in Persian and Ottoman Turkish is inconsistent with a borrowing from Arabic by literate people.
Noun
tiftik (definite accusative tiftiği, plural tiftikler)
- mohair, angora wool
- Synonym: moher
