Etymology

Traditionally considered a derivative of tìkti (to fit, suit); however, newer theories implicitly reject this hypothesis and instead consider the word a related formation, albeit not directly derived from tìkti, to Proto-Germanic *þingjaną (to believe), whence Middle High German dingen (id).[1] In either case, tìkti is still related. Compare Latvian ticēt.
