From timbur (“timber”) + maður (“man”). The sense ‘hangover’ is a Semantic loan from Danish tømmermænd (“a hangover”). The oldest attestation of timburmenn in the sense "hangover" in the Orðabók Háskólans is from an issue of Fjallkonan from 1891[1] which goes as follows:
