Either an old loanword from an East Germanic language, Gepid or Gothic *𐌸𐌹𐌿𐌷𐌱𐍂𐍉𐌺𐍃 (*þiuhbrōks) (cf. Old High German theobroch (“gaiters”), English thigh, breeches),[1] via Late Latin tubrucus, or, a more probable theory, a derivative of tjerr.[2]
